Elephant Butte Lake offers exceptional seasonal opportunities to see American White Pelicans, Sandhill Cranes, Snow Geese, Western & Clark’s Grebes, Terns and more, as do nearby surrounding areas such as Percha Dam, Las Palomas Marsh and Caballo Lake. Further north between Elephant Butte and Socorro, you’ll find Bosque del Apache, abundant with migratory birds in spring and fall.

If you’ve never experienced Elephant Butte’s night skies, you’ll marvel at how our dark night skies magically reveal a myriad of stars and the Milky Way. It’s easy to enjoy our night skies from the lake or anywhere in Elephant Butte, but you can also create your own personal or group star party at which you’ll see amazing details through huge telescopes.

TRINITY SITE
See where the first atomic bomb was exploded on July 16, 1945, including base camp, ground zero, the ranch house where the plutonium core was assembled and part of the original crater left by the explosion. Trinity Site is open the first Saturday in April only. Enter north of Elephant Butte at the I-25 San Antonio exit and head 12 miles east to the Stallion Gate entrance.

WHITE SANDS MISSLE RANGE
For a great day trip from Elephant Butte, you can trace the origin of America’s missile and space activity at White Sands Missile Range museum and park, open year round. You’ll see a variety of missiles and rockets tested at White Sands and will enjoy the many exhibits in the museum. Plus, just a bit further east you can enter White Sands National Monument for a walk and sledding on the dunes.

VERY LARGE ARRAY
VERY LARGE ARRAY
For a space-related day trip north of Elephant Butte, visit the Very Large Array near Magdalena. Open from 8:30 am through sunset, the VLA offers a close look at the 27 enormous antennae, each 82 feet in diameter, that collectively provide astronomers with images of black holes, stars and other marvels of the universe. The Visitors Center is open daily, and special tours are offered the first Saturday of every month.
